I thought this had to do with Joan thinking she would take over the
Tonight Show after JC retired. From what they were saying on the tribute
shows today, it was Letterman that was being eyed to take over (since at
the time Dave was having hassles with his current bosses at of the
time.)

What made Johnny and Joan such bitter enemies for years?

She hosted the first of Fox's several attempts to do a late night talker
opposite Carson. He took it as a betrayal and cut her dead.

When Joan left that show after a few months a then unknown Arsenio Hall
took over until it was cancelled at the end of the year (1987). He was so
popular he got his own talk show about a year and a half later.

Didn't Johnny make an off-the-cuff smart alek remark about Edgar
Rosenberg (Joan's hubby) right after he committed suicide?

This is how I remember it. Joan returned to work very quickly after her
husband's suicide and went on all the talk shows saying how crushed she was
that Johnny didn't call her. She went on several. He didn't make any
remark but his producer might have. Right around that time the Late Michael
Landon came on with a film clip of a bunch of rivers with a great big title
called, "Up Rivers." It was hysterically funny. But I think that was
before he died. Landon and Carson had great respect for each other. And
Carson appeared devastated at Landon's passing.

so he threw a hissy fit
