A while ago there was discussion of the Panasonic TCD-735 DECT phone and
answering machine combo, which Dick Smith had (and still have) for $128.
I'm thinking about buying one of these as my current Panasonic
cassette-based answering machine doesn't work behind my ADSL line filter
(phone works fine, but the answering machine gets a really severe volume
drop that results in it not recording any incoming messages).

Of those who bought this phone, are any of you on ADSL? If so, can you let
me know if there are any issues with the answering machine (or the phone)
when used with a line filter?

Mine works fine with ADSL. I had had the phone for some time before going
ADSL, and didn't detect any change in its behaviour when ADSL was enabled.
I'm using a line filter (cheap Li-Shin), but one day I will follow Rod's
advice and try it without a filter.

IMHO - go for it.

One thing that bothers me slightly is the disclaimer on the DSE page for
the phone on their site. It says:

"Also be aware that in some cases the product may be slightly shop soiled,
ex-demonstration, or incomplete."

Obviously any or all of the above would be unacceptable - I like my
technological products to be brand new :)

Anyone know if they're carrying any actual new stock?

Anthony,

I have two of these excellent base stations and several matching handsets.

All works fine with ADSL. I don't use a line filter - there's one already
built in but if you add a second filter (perhaps because of the way you've
wired your house when installing ADSL) the 735 will still work nicely.

The Panasonic in-built filter seems to be of high quality - absolutely no
interference from the ADSL carrier, unlike Alcatel and D-Link filters that
are on a couple of other phones in the house. The latter allow a short,
hushed burst of noise when I first pick up the phone. (This reminds me - I
must get rid of those non-DECT phones - though I will keep one connected for
emergency use in the unlikely event of a power failure.)

I bought my second 735 quite recently at DSE for $128. It was brand new -
box appeared to have never been opened. The store I purchased from said it
still had about 10 left. They didn't have it on display but knew all about
it and went out the back to get it.

The original additional handsets for the 735 are now hard to come by and
relatively expensive (unless you were lucky like me and grabbed some from
Telstra's online store before Telstra dropped this line). However, DSE has
plenty of the newer-model Pana DECT additional handsets in stock. They're
reasonably priced too - eg $44.87 for a non-speakerphone model or around $80
for a handset with built-in speakerphone. They look spiffier than the
superseded model but have exactly the same set of buttons and are compatible
with the 735 in all respects except that the new handset won't fit into the
obsolete model's battery recharge base.

Yeah, me too.

I did get my second system from them at the start of the $128
runout, and it had never been opened, but that was quite a while
ago now and I got it from DSE phone order and they dont have
any left and I have noticed that the list of shops with stock has
shrunk considerably now, so you might have a problem.

And you're right - I checked with a few DSE stores today, and all only had
demo stock left (one store told me "we've got one, but you don't want it,
it's stuffed"!)

So unfortunately it looks like I missed this one by a wide margin. Next
question, then - anyone got the new KX-TG5240 5.8GHz Panasonic?

http://panasonic.com.au/products/details.cfm?objectID=2110

This one's substantially more expensive obviously, but still seems to be
good value - as long as it works properly behind an ADSL line filter, or
has one built in.

Once again, any and all opinions are welcome!

The same reference you provided says a filter is necessary (if this wraps
too much, just go to the URL ^^ and click on the FAQ)

True :)

I saw that earlier, but by looking at the FAQ as a whole it seems to be
more of a blanket answer for their entire product line than any specific
info about the phone; none of Panasonic's literature (or even the user
manual) for the 735 suggested it included an inbuilt line filter, but more
than one person has reported that it does.

I'd say it would be unlikely on the newer phone, but you never know :)

As long as the unit works properly behind a (D-Link) filter, though, I'll
be happy.

Ah yes, there it is - they listed the Brand as "Pana", making finding it
with their fairly useless search engine near-impossible :)

"This product is only available to personal shoppers at the Retail Stores
listed below. We will not ship or transfer this product to another Store."

I checked another four DSE stores today; all only had "incomplete" or "to
be sent back for repair" stock of the 735. Looks like I'll be searching for
a different phone...

Speaking of which, whatever happened to the TCD-510AL DECT phone/answering
machine? That was the blue one with the seriously large blue backlit
screen, which otherwise looked similar to the basic DECT units they sell
now.

Anthony,

What city are you in?

I personally visited the following DSEs over the past 3 days and can confirm
that when I attended, each store had several new, unopened 735s in stock.

The stores:

Brisbane: Strathpine
ACT: Tuggeranong
Perth: Claremont

In each case, I was advised that the shop will accept phone orders and post
the phone at cost. Staff estimated the shipping cost at "around $10"
(though in Perth they thought it would be about $15).

It's a phone worth killing for so I reckon you should pursue it
relentlessly. At $128, it's a steal.

(Hopefully you didn't go just to check on stock for the 735 :P )

I rang Strathpine a cpl of months ago and they were out. Wonder where

Yes, I had simiar results from DSE re the 735.
As far as other phones, what else is there available.
With regards to similar or a little more in price.
With say answering m/c speaker phone handsfree etc...

Going by the responses from store staffers I spoke to on the phone or in
person, they are constantly getting enquiries about the 735. Perhaps it's
time they took it off the web site :-)

> As far as other phones, what else is there available.

Basically there's the TCD445, which does all the above but does not have
any controls on the base (not necessarily a problem for most people). That
retails for around $135, but can be found cheaper. In appearance it looks
very much like every other Panasonic DECT phone currently on sale - and
yes, that means the crappy 70s-style LED display :-)

The only phone Panasonic has that can compete with the 735 on features -
and looks - is the DSS-based 5240. And I think that's the one I'll go for,
having finally convinced myself that rumours from the US of Panasonic's
2.4Ghz and 5.8GHz phones actually being analogue are probably not
applicable to this model :)

I'm still interested in feedback from anyone who's used the 5240 with ADSL,
though...

Presumably DS wants to get rid of the demo stock.

The defective one you mentioned should have been taken off the
stock list and then that store wouldnt show up on that web page.

Yeah, I dont use the base controls all that much.

I do use them a bit tho, particularly when the handset battery is flat.

It goes from warning to stopping very quickly.

No big deal now that I have two handsets, easy to switch
the call to the other handset when the warning beeps start
and the other handset rings so its easy to find etc.

One downside with the 735 is that the range isnt perfect. Someone
I know with a hobby farm found that it wouldnt run to the letterbox.

That's what I thought, but the stores I visited all made no attempt to sell
the damaged/incomplete demo stock to me; all except one store said that
they are to be "sent off for repair".

Very much like my current TCD400 does. I was so used to the long advance
warning on my old Panasonic analogue phone it caught me by surprise; the
analogue phone would start beeping its battery warning, after which there
was a good hour and a half or more of talk time left...!

Range on my current DECT phone is pretty reasonable (I can take it outside
my apartment building, which is one floor down, with okay reception) but
presumably the 5.8GHz phones would do better...

I meant thats why DS keeps it on the web site.

Dunno, that individual got a uniden instead and its fine range wise.

Fucks reception on the Sony digital radio tho.

Thats just plain wrong. I know someone who did what I said and got it fine.

Yeah, a few unopened ones did show up on ebay
for while, but there havent been any for a while now.

Dunno, most Jap operations change models like they change shirts.

Thats the major downside with operations like Panasonic,
FAR too many models changed FAR too quickly.

Maybe they're just trying to get people into the store so they can sell
them stuff with a better profit margin once they realise there are no 735s
left :)

And quite a few models never released here at all: I notice on the UK
Panasonic site that there's a whole new range of phones in the 500 series,
now with 30 minute answering machine recording...

I did find the TCD500 (the blue DECT phone with polyphonic ringtones and
seriously big LCD screen) in a couple of stores yesterday - but not the
510, which is the one with an answering machine. Panasales in Brighton
(Melbourne) had plenty there for $169, but later I found them at
Retravision in Prahran, who told me that they'd just bought a pile of them
from Panasonic and would be selling them soon for $49. An absolute bargain
if you don't want an answering machine in the phone...!

Or maybe its just not very well worded and they actually
mean that they wont transfer it to another store, but that
doesnt mean that a store with stock wont post it to you.

Dunno, the 735 did take a long time to
show up here after the poms had had it.

Yeah, tho the ones listed by the mafiosa should be fine if you want a 735.

I'd pay the extra myself, in fact I did.

Yep. With two bases now too. Works fine.

Nope, and you dont even need a line filter, it appears to have one built in.

Yes, using ADSL. No issues. Using a Netcomm ADSL filter.
