 | I moved about 3 months ago, and found out that the line that was installed is not DSL capable. It terminates in a RIM box a couple of blocks away.
Telstra are apparently doing a review of the area but have no idea when that box will become DSL capable (or alternate connection paths can be found)
Are there any ways to speed up the process, like ordering a DSL through bigpond? Are there any specific depts that I can contact to find out more information? (I signed up through Internode so technically I am not a Telstra customer...)
I live in a new area of Roxburgh Park (Vic) which borders Craigieburn, so the parent exchanges of each suburb are not exactly close by. (Incidentally I had no problems with getting DSL in Craigieburn last year, even though that area is actually older than where my current home is...)
Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, move closer to the Telstra exchange, a couple of blocks should be fine from what what you wrote :-). Remember it is the path of the cable to your home that counts, not the crow flying distance. > > I live in a new area of Roxburgh Park (Vic) which borders Craigieburn, > so the parent exchanges of each suburb are not exactly close by. > (Incidentally I had no problems with getting DSL in Craigieburn last > year, even though that area is actually older than where my current > home is...)
The age of the area is usually not the issue, it is the distance and type of Telstra equipment that counts most. Note very few ISP offer a true alternative to Telstra. > > Thanks in advance for any help. >
Not sure that it helps at all.

Yes, put your number into http://www.telstra.com.au/adsl/ordering/search.cfm when it says you cant have adsl, it will offer you an opportunity to register your interest and when they get enough off that RIM doing that, they will add a minimux to the rim.

In theory that makes no difference. In practice it sometimes does.
> Are there any specific depts that I can contact to find out more information?
Nope.

In theory that doesnt matter.

It really depends mostly on whether the line is off a rim and how far from the exchange it is if it isnt.

If you formally apply for ADSL, they will attempt transposition, moving your line to an ADSL-capable pair, if one exists

Transposition is available through any DSL provider

Irrelevant

 | Just keep applying and re-applying through your preferred service providor.

Which won't do much - applying once & regestering your interest is sufficient.

maybe check the www.whirlpool.net.au phone number / exchange search and bigpond 'record your interest' phone number check facility.
I guess whirlpool doesnt know about individual RIM problems.

Well, the things that fix a RIM cant be done just for one customer, so no you cant really do much to fix the RIM.
Maybe you want wireless (terrestial or satellite) internet in the mean time. or maybe ISDN.
www.dcita.gov.au for their hibis funding - which might help you if you dont live in a 'metro' area.
>(I signed up through Internode so technically I am > not a Telstra customer...)
yes, it may upset bigpond if you dont pay telstra directly for the telephone line.
they may open doors for a customer, but they cant actually move mountains.
