Family Fights To Save 'Bambi' From DNR
DNR Says Deer Must Be Killed Or Moved To Rehabilitation Facility

POSTED: 12:03 am EST December 23, 2004
UPDATED: 11:43 am EST December 23, 2004

Last May, Mike and Ilene Smith saved a
two-week-old fawn after its mother was
hit and killed by a car.
Bambi

Over the next year and a half they nurtured and watched her grow,
but now Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials says
the Smiths cannot keep her any longer.

The Smiths say they are taking good care of
Bambi and should be allowed to keep her.

They even have a 12-foot-high fence to keep other animals out.

But because Smith doesn't have a wildlife license,
the DNR says what he's doing is illegal.

The DNR says Bambi has to be put to sleep or
moved to a rehabilitation facility in Walworth
County.

The Smiths are beside themselves with worry.

"You don't sleep nights,
my wife has lost 12 pounds and
every car that slows down you think
the DNR is coming to take her," Mike said.

Smith said he doesn't understand where the
DNR is coming from because as far as he was
concerned everything was fine following a
talk with one representative last fall.

"She told us the deer was too domesticated
to be rehabilitated so the animal would have
to stay here," Mike said.

Greg Matthews said the DNR cannot
make an exception to the rules.

"If you make an exception here,
every person from here on out will
say they have a unique circumstance,"
Matthews said.

Matthews also told News 3 the DNR never
told the Smiths they could keep the deer,
and since part of Dodge County has been
added to the chronic wasting disease zone,
the animals are no longer returned to the
wild, but euthanized.

"In May of '03 when they took this animal
out of the wild it could have been rehabilitated,
it's not an option anymore," Matthews said.

The Smith say they will fight for Bambi.

"We're not going to let this go," Mike said

"We're going all the way."

What makes this even more frustrating
for the Smiths is that they've rehabilitated
animals for more than 30 years.

Mike says you don't need a piece a
paper to say you can take care of
an animal.

The DNR says you do, and if necessary,
the DNR says it's ready to physically
remove Bambi from the farm.

I'm not a deer, so that would be impossible. That's why God made deer,
to eat and use their skin. And they're happy- happy, I tell you- to
offer themselves for this purpose.

torresD advocates that Mike and Ilene Smith break the law by harboring a
wild animal without a license. torresD advocates the killing of innocent
Israeli women and children by evil Palestinian homicide bombers. torresD
advocates using You Know Who’s skin to make a buckskin. The Germans in
World War II made lampshades from the skin of Jews.

Que pasa, Majon? You think hambergers grow on trees? Those are the two
choices DNR offered. For my part, deer sausage tastes great.

The pig went on vacations,
to places near and far,
For fighting wars on schedule,
is very good PR.
The generals love the piggies,
and the natives think them swell,
At least they often say so
after putting them through hell.

Why do they need a deer rehabilitation facility??

He should count himself lucky, she could have gained 12 pounds instead.

So they caused the problem by keeping it illegally as a pet. Punish them
and get it over with.

Sounds exciting.

So they are serial offenders. Put them in prison.

Mort, the hooves aren't razor sharp. Yes, a doe can do a lot of damage
with the hoofs, but that's another story.
