 | Last week my Windows Media Player 9 stopped playing video links on web sites.
It also will no longer play local wmv files.
WMV's will no longer play in Internet Explorer either.
I'm running XP Home SP2 with the latest updates. I've been trying to link this problem to any new software recently installed. There was a Windows Update about automatic worm protection, it might have started when that was installed but cannot say for certain.
I'm runing Windows Firewall and Norton AV but not Norton's firewall. I thought this might be an issue until I realized local wmv's wouldn't play either.
I can open WMP and play mpegs and avis from my HDD but not wmv.
I uninstalled WMP 9 and updated to WMP 10. I get the same error message and refusal to play wmv videos from my HDD or any videos on the web.
I uninstalled WMP 10 and reinstalled WMP 9 from my Windows CD, still no luck.
Example of unplayable link:

Any ideas?
I can't roll back to a saved restore point, system restore was off.
When I click on a link WMP opens and attempts to connect to the medium.
Then an error message appears. The initial error message contains no error code. It is a useless generic:
"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
There is an error report generated, if it helps to see it, please let me know.
I've run spyware removal tools and a full system Norton scan. No change.
Thank you for any help. I really miss being able to click on anything anywhere and have it work.
