hopefully this is the appropriate group... I couldn't find a group
specific to QTVR

i have a dumb question that I should be able to run circles around, but
it's got me stumped... getting a quicktime movie (.mov) to fast start
(progressive streaming... you should be able to see the quicktime
progress bar load up (darken) on the right side of the progress bar as
the movie starts to play from the left.

I've done this lots of times before... I'm thinking it MIGHT be a server
config issue, although that SHOULDN'T hsve any effect on a fast start
movie.

I'm running OS X server 10.3.8 with Apache.

I compressed the movie with Sorenson 3.1 Pro and MPG audio, running
QuickTime 6.5.2 Pro on the creating/viewing/client computer.

I compressed the movie with Cleaner 6.01, using the Soresonson 3.1 Pro
codec (and the MPG-3 codec for audio) with the Sorenson settings below:

I processed the video (24 fps source... I know, overkill) down to 12 fps
with Use B-Frames/Playback Scalability/Auto Key Frames 50/Min Quality 0,
Frame Dropping and Image Smoothing On. (although, in the main Sorenson
screen shows Keyframes at None/Natural, I'm going to assume that the
codec knows which keyframes setting it needs to use... none or 50.)

the source movie (editted and compiled with iMovie) was a hideous 46.5GB
(ackkk!), that compressed down to 48MB with Sorenson Pro... I am in awe
of that codec.

the mime type *is* setup on the server, I thought that might have been
the problem. (qt/mov = video/quicktime)

a much smaller movie WAS successfully created with fast start (years
ago)... that one IS fast start, although I've been having trouble
getting it to do so in my browsers. makes me think it's my server. i was
able to fast start it once by dragging a local copy into a browser
window, but it's so small, it's totally cached now, hard to tell if it's
fast starting or just loading real fast.)

thanks much, happy gnu year, peeps.

And you can move forward and backwards in the grey, but what is your
problem?

for me at least (and everywhere I've tried it), the entire movie has to
download before starting... even the movie controller doesn't appear
until the movie has downloaded.

the frame rate is wonderfully reasonable... video is 11.7 KB/sec, and
the audio is 8.1 KB/sec, so we should be cooking along.

I recall hearing something about double encoding a movie, or wrapping a
movie inside a movie to get around a problem... am I close?

thanks for your help, it's been driving me crazy ;o)

thanks much.
