It doesn't know which to do and that is why driving in the winter, up north here, is so dangerous. One has to look out for icy water and watery ice because both are trouble.

Why people up here in new england don't /always/ buy permanently engaged AWD vehicles is beyond me. And no, 4WD is not the answer either, which is another (albeit lesser) mistake people make.
The car manufacturers are s.l.o.w.l.y learning their lesson here it seems, and more and more sedans are coming AWD, some even stock, like all of subaru's offerings.
