Does anyone know of a way to set opera 8 so that it doesn't download the
attachments to a newsgroup message. Getting real tired of my antivirus
griping about 15-100 '*.scr' files with various and sundry 'security risks'

Are they actually attachments? Most usenet postings use uuencoding. Opera
displays them like attachments, but they are actually part of the message.

Find a message with a small attachment and press C to copy the raw message
to the clipboard. Paste it into a text editor or use your clipboard
viewer, and see if it is an actual attachment (with a separator, file
name, content type, and content disposition) or just a bunch of data.
Opera couldn't not download uuencoded files, as I say they are part of the
message.

Well, that's interesting ... no quotes in this message thread.

You're right, looking at it with notepad shows it contained *in* the
message. Begin 644 appears to be the start point of the 'attachment'.

What I'm seeing is each time I download messages from the newsgroups I
inhabit (HTML and JavaScript) my antivirus invariably pops up with several
messages which contain a virus. Since I have Opera set up to check mail
every 10 minutes that means that every 10 minutes I have to wait for the
download to complete (a few seconds) and then clear the alert box that my
AV puts up. After a while it gets to be a little aggravating. If I trap
them as spam then they;re already on my system so the AV has had his fun
with them - but at least they are now all together so I can delete them in
one 'fell swoop' The spammer doesn't use any single id or host so I can't
block him that way, I have to look at content of the mesage 'body contains
begin 644' which works.

Any suggestions??

Time to look for a decent news provider. i haven't seen a single usenet
virus since my ISP started scanning its newsfeed.

Any suggestions on how to not get these ....

Go back to the default mode of downloading headers only? If the subjects
are fairly obvious (as in "Osama bin Laden found hanged") then just delete
the message without reading it. If they actually look like regular
postings, no idea - unless you can set your AV to filter mail silently.

What I used to do was switch to the list-only view, delete obvious spam
and virus messages, then switch back to "List and message below" and read
the stuff that looks interesting. If you've gone back to the default mode
for newsgroups, that means you've never downloaded all the obvious junk
messages, it's only the less-obvious stuff you'll have to download to see
what it is.

I was afraid of that. It's interesting, though, that it's only Opera and
the way it handles messages that kick off the AV. I've been looking at
several other readers which download the messages and then the spam filter
kicks in - without ever setting off the AV -- which really makes me wonder
.....????
