Actually, for a person of means, it matters little if you are talking

All I'm saying is, what someone pays for an object they desire is not
anyone's business. While you may say they are crazy, I just don't think
it's that big a deal. At least not when you compare it to the cost of a
copper bathtub for 5000 US. (per 1998 Miller's) I know what you think of
Millers and I also think book prices are too high in this instance.
As I said before, if someone wants to buy some item of interest to them, and
they have the means, they should be able to buy it at any price they are
willing to pay. He may have cut a check for 200,000 the day before for the
victims of the Tsunami. Who knows. And who are we to judge?

Indeed they should. But this is a piece of crap - for that price they
could have bought something worth having.

This is an elitist attitude, and proudly so. If you _can_ have any
notion of "fine art", you have to accept the existence of some
standard of objective quality, not just personal interest.

If I were rich, and I wanted to collect the "history of post-Ford
consumerism through children's artefacts", then I might well spend
$12K on a nice Japanese giant robot toy of the era. They're cute, I
can see the attraction of collecting the bright tin toys (and even
lunchboxes) of the period. But this thing is ugly - it's a prototype,
not even a finished product. Can anyone really claim that the
_lunchbox_ is a significant enough step in the history of consumption
to be worth $12K ? Elvis' suit, Churchill' cigar stub from Yalta,
those have a significance that this thing just does not.

I'm not rich - $12K is something I might spend, I might even spend it
on a hobby, but not on a one-off collectible of _any_ quality. But
there are plenty of people around who do have that sort of dispoable
cash. This isn't about condemning a collector who spends $12K, it's
about a mere _lunchbox_.

A couple of years ago, i watched GI Joe prototype action figures and hand

If a customer had walked into ronnies store and dropped a thousand on a
lunch box, i guess that would be a different story , right? We have all made
a living ( albeit modest) from individuals who just "gotta have" that
"widget". A smart dealer knows what may connect with a given customer even
if the dealer his/her self , may not have any interest or connection to the
piece. We are dealers, not judges on a given persons buying habits. I will

PS: I was once asked to do a NY Times piece on new uses for old gas
stations, and I found one place in which a station had been converted
into an art school. They used the old vehicle lift as a platform for
nude models in order to give students various perspectives. It made a
good story that ran in the lower righthand corner of Page One of the
paper's Home Section. Unfortunately, the story in the opposite corner
had a headline that referred to "Preorgasmic Women." My own informal
survey showed that absolutely no one even noticed MY story. :(

Thanks for the link Kris.........love the '49 black and white shot. Nice job
on the resto....kudos to your friends. In reality, my building was designed
by my wife and I and built from scratch. She's a helluva an artist and drew
the building in color 8 years ago. We built it 2 years ago and designed our
residence to look like an old general store with all the vintage signage as
well. Been working on a webpage lately but its become so well visited(the
store) I don't have much time for anything else.....Ronnies comments

novelty local tourist attraction. Selling (it would appear) for the
*most* part, repro-retro, and over worked restored (semi-modern)

I always figured that we're all talking (basically) about every item
ever made in the history of the world....and there's someone to
appreciate each and every item. Thank God.

I'd *love* to see the dealer/appreciator who never got caught with
a repro item. Most will say they haven't, but none are that smart.

I have restored 1000's of items for the public as well as museums and the
movie industry. In the eighties, i wrote for several magazines and
newspapers on antiques and collectibles. These facts are lost on Ronnie but

I wouldn't be surprised if this was just another attempt to force the
market by shills. Not long ago I saw a half dozen ordinary late 19th
Century Singer treadle machines go on the unmentionable online auction
for over $1600.00 each, that normally struggle to sell at all. The same
bidder in each case was bumping up his bid several times, against no
other bid. Once the bid got ridiculous other punters jumped in thinking
it was a treasure or rare model. I later got a call to appraise one
purchased by someone influenced by such a sale, thinking they got a
really good deal getting theirs for "Only $600.00". Needless to say they
were not pleased to be told they paid over three times the market value
of a comparable machine.

nine months and a year before I was able to use my computer. Then for almost
two years after that, since going broadband, my modems, dial-ups, and ISP
provider have all been arguing with one another as to whether I could view
or not and then whether I could post or not to a newsgroup. Now, it seems I
can once again post to my favourite newsgroup.

Schoun, Gerald Clough, and many others, whose names I still remember. And
Cyanogirl, proudmari, Reyne, and Doris Bialis if they are still around

This seemed to be an appropriate point to join in the fray since I felt I
could contribute to the debate even though no longer a dealer or lecturer in
antiques.

Firstly, Mike, your reference to a shill is akin to ringing at auctions, but
in any event is a dubious means of raising prices. Shills appear here in the
audience at so-called mock auctions - but our Trading Standards officers are
more on the ball these days. Mind you "there's one born every minute", " a
fool and his money...", "a little knowledge...", and "free lunches" all
spring to mind.

However, creating, or protecting a market position is and always has been a
fair business ploy.

When dealing at fairs I would make a point of going around early to all the
other stalls; and if one dealer was offering something on his stall, similar
but at a significantly lower price than on mine, I would buy it (always, of
course negotiating a lower "trade" price ;~). I could then offer it later at
my price in another fair or in my antiques centre stalls, often many miles
away. Or if mine sold at the fair, replace it with the new purchase.

Conversely, if my item was a lot cheaper, the dealer immediately became a
prospective customer.

Incidentally, I did not "invent the wheel" - many other dealers would do
exactly the same! I sold a lot of items at well below market price until my
learning curve kicked in.

In the same way major dealers in specialist items would corner, or attempt
to corner, the market so they could set their own price levels. Nicholas
Pine did it with Goss and other crested china and then published his own
books and price guides on the subject. Another dealer fairly local to me in
the 1980s set the scene for Clarice Cliff prices. (Mind you right up to the
1990s I was predicting the Clarice Cliff bubble would burst, but that does
not seem to be the case today.) Mint & Boxed tried to do the same for Dinky
Toys, but they were crooks and were put out of business - but not until a
lot of money had changed hands.

Of course, carboot sales, then auctioneers buyers premiums and lotting
charges, and more recently *bay and the Internet, and the plethora of
Antiques Roadshows, Cash in the Attic, and similar tv fodder have changed
the markets beyond recognition.

But now I am retired, I can sit on the sidelines and remember the glory days
:-)

Your input and insight IMO has been sadly missed, so much like many a
knowledgeable poster this ng has lost over the last few years.

And on a personal note I've missed your musings and local e-mail

You can visit the "leafy lanes" of The Deepings (Lincolnshire UK) by

I don't know where the Lovejoy filming was done, but the author Jonathan
Gash was a lecturer in tropical diseases at Cambridge and most of the
stories are set in East Anglia - although always using fictitious place
names, except for the main towns.

The nearby Newmarket race track (surely every Irishman knows where that is
;>) is now the venue for numerous antiques fairs and the whole area is still
fairly densely populated with antiques centres - many catering for the
tastes of the extensive ex-pat Americans and the their families, especially
at Mildenhall in Suffolk.

Good to hear from you, I hadn't received an email from you for a while
and thought I might have hunt you up like I did Kris Baker and "T" some
years ago;~)

Being in the business for a long time does bring a lot of
perspective to changing markets and how dealers have adapted in the
past. Myself, I've closed my restoration shop except for my own stuff
and work full time in the appraisal business, mainly because the local
market has been flooded with people who really haven't a clue.
Most have no genuine love of either antiques or the thrill of the hunt.
It's one thing to sell to make a living, but if we don't get the joy of
it all, we might as well be selling life insurance;~)I still rememeber
my first auctions like yesterday, standing in all kinds of weather for
hours to bid on treasures in box lots or hid in a trunk full of old
magazines.

Right now I'm helping a friend right now who is an " Old Time" Type
dealer get into the 21st Century by setting up his inventory control and
web site to sell smalls and specialty items that don't move in the
warehouse. He bought a computer three years ago and we just now took it
out of the box ;~)

P.S. How is the driving coming along?

As one website designer claims in his own home page "An Internet presence is
no longer a trading advantage or an add-on - it's essential." Antiques, as a
business, is now certainly well represented there. And I have lost count of
the stories of well-established dealers doing 50, or even 100% of their
business on the Internet. I even subscribe to the Antiques Trade Gazette
weekly newsletter online.

I created a detailed stock (inventory control) database using MS Office
Access that certainly kept track of my business activities in great detail;
but I never had occasion to translate to the WWW. Would you like me to
e-mail you with a copy? It is no longer commercially sensitive to me.

I did clear a lot of miscellaneous smalls on *bay when I came out of
hospital. The cash was welcome and packing parcels was good therapy for my
hands.

The driving is coming along fine, thanks. Ronnie will laugh when I tell you
I have got a Volvo 940 Wentworth auto estate fitted with hand controls. The
"dealer's vehicle of choice" is ideal for carting wheelchairs, electric
scooters, and walking frames, etc... ;>)

I understand Jon D has had a rough time in the last few years - health- and
family-wise. I don't see him posting, but he may still lurk?

I notice the "what is it" threads seem popular. Perhaps I should try some of
my trivia quiz questions again. Mind you, readers would have to know
something about "real" antiques :>(
