 | Sorry for the two off topic posts. But, where better to ask a question like this. I'm planning on doing some traveling in in 2005 and want to enjoy myself.
I've never flown on a plane before and have been afraid to. But, I want to go visit the coffee shops. Can anyone recommend a site where I can pay for the flight and the hotel in one bill? I saw one that was around 800 dollars for around a 5 day stay. I'm not sure how many days I entered, but it was about that many. That seems very cheap to me.
Can anyone suggest a good place online to book the flight and get the hotel? I'd prefer a place where I could do both at the same time. Also, I don't want to be stuck in some shitty part of town. I want it to be nice and safe with a few good coffee shops to visit. Actually, just one would be enough for me. How much should I expect to pay for a 5-7 day trip? Including the ride on the plane and hotel.

What city are you flying out of? I made my fourth visit to Amsterdam last February and I always use bookings.nl for my lodging. Although booking a combo deal which includes air and hotel might sound pretty good, check out individual prices first before booking.
Coffeeshops are spread out all over Amsterdam with most of them being concentrated in the more touristy areas, the Leidseplein and the Damrak area close to Central Station. A nice area to stay in is the Joordan. Hotels I've stayed in that I could recommend are Hotel Atlanta (on the Rembrandtplein) and the Art Gallery Hotel, right across from the Rijksmuseum. In fact, there is a small, pretty cool coffeeshop behind the Art Gallery Hotel called Coffeeshop Moon. It isn't too hard to find a coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
You might try bidding for an airfare on Priceline.com. You have to enter your credit card info first before bidding, but there are some incredible deals to be had. I would suggest an amount to bid with but I don't know where you're flying out of. United usually has decent deals. This winter has been sucky for airfares to Amsterdam. Last year, I found a fare from Oakland for a total of $365. This year they have been in the $500 range. Also, keep in mind, the value of the US dollar in Europe right now SUCKS! My trip last year cost significantly more because of it. But after your first visit to a coffeeshop, it won't matter anyway.
Regarding coffeeshops, be sure to visit Coffeeshop Rusland. I believe it is the oldest one in Amsterdam and I've always enjoyed my visits there. Order a soft drink or a cup of coffee and then smoke some Blueberry out of the Volcano Vaporizer. It is sure to put a smile on your face. Other popular coffeeshops include Barney's Breakfast Bar, Bluebird, and the Greenhouse. I've found that the coffeeshops away from the more touristy ones are more enjoyable. You'll see locals popping in for a purchase and it is much more mellow. Also, the prices can be lower but they may not offer as much on the menu. Check out www.hiptravelguide.com for more info on coffeeshops. Hope this helps!
Burn one for me!

Thank you for the info. My problem is, I can only afford around 1,000 for air fare and hotel. There are a few places on priceline and some other site I can't think of at the moment. Maybe hotwire. I'd like to have a little money for goodies and to have fun. I'm not looking to do much. Just visit coffee shops and go out and eat. I need a change of scenery and I've always wanted to go there. I've wanted to feel what freedom feels like.

or Michael, I'd recommend focusing on the cheapest airfare you can find (consolidator, online, courier), then worry about the hotel. hostels are ok, and while usually group rooms, you can also often pay a bit more and get an individual room there relatively cheaply. http://www.hihostels.com/ and here's the recent A'dam thread that appeared here a couple weeks ago...lots of juicy info therein: http://tinyurl.com/67x2a

I'm an adult looking for some fun :) Are the coffee shops everywhere? I would like to find a coffee shop that I can walk to. Is there one near every major hotel?
