Hi all,

I'm getting ready to buy a new tv and I'm interested in your comments. Here's
my scenario:

-want to buy in the next month or two, in anticipation of not being to get
another tv for at least 5-7 years. We are pregnant with our first and I know
as soon as the baby comes and my wife stops working I'm not going to be ready
to make any toy purchases for a while.

-Would like to stay under $2200.

-Space is not an issue (depth). I've got a wall unit that supports
traditional style tube tvs that isnt changing. The space is 30" deep, and I
want the front of the screen to line up with the front of the wall unit.
Width of the space is just over 40"

-Family room is setup so the seating positions are approx. 12-15 feet
(depending where you sit) from the viewing surface. Playstation 2 gaming
happens about 4-6 feet in front of the set. Room does not have direct
sunlight, but windows do let in alot of ambient light.

Given all my requirements I am leaning towards a Sony KD-34XBR960. Tube
quality, HD tuner built in, and fits in my space. I am moderately worried
about watching the screen from 12-15' away, but we are currently watching a
4:3 SD 25" at that distance so I suspect that we will enjoy the bigger size
and improved quality.

I pushed plasma off my list early because of heating/burn in issues, and I
looked at projection LCD/DLP options but thought I might be happier with
slightly smaller screen but the HD tuner and XBR quality. And obviously
straight LCD is too expensive given the size I'm working with.

Any comments? Am I on the right track in my thinking?

Oh yes, and should I mail order to save $400 or buy local?

Well, you have probably picked the perfect set for your budget, the
Sony KD-34XBR960, and it is the "Reference" set for HDTV. A fantastic
television. I would buy local just for the fact you can return it if
you got a lemon. Great choice Mark. CRT's though heavy and bulky offer
the best picture quality. Get it before the SuperBowl :)
