 | Aussie Hindu temple heads under Tiger threat
A leading Hindu temple in Australia has come under threat from LTTE front organizations based there. These organization, which have been banned in Australia have launched an intimidatory campaign against the temple's management, an Asian Tribune report filed from Sydney said on Friday.
The AT report said: Members of the Board of Management of Sydney Murugan Temple have faced attempted assault and verbal abuse in the hands of leading activists of these front organisations. Their campaign follows stern action by the temple management against cadres of the LTTE front organisations who were harassing temple devotees in their attempt to raise funds for Sri Lankan Tamil tsunami victims.
According to temple sources, leading activists and cadres of the Tamil Coordinating Committee (TCC) and Tamils Relief Organisation (TRO) descended on the temple premises on the 31st night, at a time when large number of Hindu devotees was gathering to participate in special New Year poojas. They had come with tills to collect funds for Tamil victims of the Boxing Day tsunami in Sri Lanka.
In their over-zealous attempts to raise funds, they stood on the roadside and on the paths to the temple pestering, annoying and embarrassing devotees entering the temple premises to worship. On seeing devotees getting annoyed and embarrassed by the cadres of the LTTE front organisations, members of the temple management intervened and requested them to desist from harassing the devotees.
The temple management prevented TCC and TRO cadres entering the temple when they attempted to gain entry inside the temple premises to collect funds from devotees engaged in worship. Angered TCC activists attempted to assault a Vice President of the Management Committee and demanded entry into the temple.
The temple management had previously decided not to allow any fund raising in the temple premises as it would interfere with temple ceremonies and peaceful meditation, and as it
would also set a precedence for all sorts of organisations to come to the temple to collect funds from devotees.
Following these incidents on the 31st December, activists of the LTTE front organisations and their supporters launched a verbal assault on members of the Sydney Murugan Temple Management through a pro-LTTE Sydney Tamil radio station. "Imba Thamil Oli", a twenty-four hour radio station operating in the FM narrow band lashed at the temple management.
Derogatory remarks and defamatory statements against members of the temple management were made during several extended broadcasts.
The Australian Federal Government has identified the Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation as an entity associated with LTTE and has refused to fund TRO's development program because of its association with the Sri Lankan rebel outfit, which is banned in Australia as a terrorist group. Despite this categorisation, the Australian Federal Agencies appear, so far not to have investigated into TRO's funds or audited its foreign remittances.
