Tyagis who fought the Razakars get pension
New Delhi/Hyderabad, Jan 13: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved pensions for 4,000 more persons who participated in the Hyderabad liberation movement. The Hyderabad liberation movement now covers the anti-Razakar movement which was run by the erstwhile Hyderabad State Congress and later the Communists.
Union Information and Bro-adcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said the pension amount would be around Rs 4,000 per month, in addition to provision of free rail pass. The number of beneficiaries under the pension scheme of 1980 now climbs to 15,000. This would entail an additional burden of Rs 20.74 crore annually to the exchequer.
The enhancement of the number of beneficiaries was made on the basis of recommendations made by the Indrajit Gupta Committee. The report was not implemented by the Vajpayee government. This would also benefit about 2,400 applicants, whose cases were rejected on account of their not belonging to the earlier approved list of 98 camps and the applicants whose verification reports are yet to be received from the State governments.
TRS legislature party secretary E Rajender said, "The Centre has recognised even the armed struggle against the Nizam's rule as freedom struggle and given it a legal status." PCC president K Keshava Rao said it was a long over due and added that a few more people were left over and the government should consider their case. BJP State unit president N Indrasena Reddy also hailed the decision.
