To make themselves appear more acceptable, homoual activists are trying
to claim Lincoln was . A book on this has been published, and has had
some discussion, citing certain "well known" aspects of Lincoln's life which
are claimed to point to his homouality.

My question is this: Lincoln was the national leader during the period of
American history of its worst internal conflict and was probably more hated
than any other President.
Wouldn't any "ness" of Lincoln, real or imaginary, have been seized upon
before, during and after this presidency to discredit him, his leadership
and the Union cause? How could a behavioral tendency for which there was no
tolerance and was essentially illegal during that time, have gone
un-commented upon at a time like that - if it were true?

Thanks

Very likely. Samuel Tilden was accused of being homoual, even if
they didn't use that word at the time.

Then, as now, if a guy was too fastidious and avoided the company of
pretty young women, he raised eyebrows.
